The Government defeats in tho House of Lords on tho amendments to the Irish Lnud Bill, it is believed, seriously embarrass the Premier, and place the measure in jeopardy. August 8. The Irish Land Bill has passed through Committee. The Standard asserts tliat the Government will move in the House that the j amendment by the Lords he not a»rced ! to, and that virtually tlio whole. House ] will side with the Government. j It is believed that the Uppov Cham- j ber will not insist on its amendments. The Times, referring to the prospect ) of compromise, says that the landlords \ must recognise that the Government ' have conceded much, and that it cannot accept discredit or a failure. I August 9.
