The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY, JULY 31. 1896. THE GORGE BRIDGE.
— o Oub couteuiporary, the Standard, is very outspoken on the question of the re-erection of the Gorge bridge, and says :— '* A remark ainde the other day by the Minium- of Lands has more significance in it than appears oa the surface, namely, that if a guarantee was given that the Lower Gorge bridge would not be re-instated he would form the Palmerston-Pahiatua road into a dray road. We have good r«aion for saying that it is not improbable Government would do this in preference to forcing the local bodies, under the Public Works Act, to re construct the Gorge bridge. Surely the people interested are not goity to allow the local bodies to play fast and loose with the matter, especially wh -n the tolls collected would pay almost
the whole of the interest that would | represent the local bodies' contribution towards the work. We have persistently urged the local bodies to do their doty in this matter, and if by their stubborn attitude and their studious neglect to perform their proper functions, some of the residents suffer, there will be no one to blame but themselves for such a condition of affairs." We understand that at the meeting of the Manchester Road Board to be held to-morrow, more will be heard on this very important subject.
