The Manchester Rifles paraded last night in the Drill Hall for inspection by Lieut.-Col. Newall. Considering the threatening character of the weatber the attendance was very good, especially on the part of those who reside some distance away in the country. Thirtyfour of all ranks were present. After inspection, the corps was exercised in company movements by the officers, and the bayonet exercise by Lieut. Barlthrop. In the course of the drill Lieut. -Colonel Newall paid great attention .towards the correction of errors in detail, in view of the expected arrival of the new commandant, who will reach the colony in about two months. It is expected be will inspect the Weilineton District first, therefore no time is to be lost in brushing up so as to create a good first impression. After the drjll was completed, Lieut.-Col. Newall presented the prize given by Captain Kirton won by Corporal Evans, by making the highest score in the Morris tube match with the Napier Rifles. He also informed Volunteer Richards, the winner of the second medal for Marksmen in the North Island, who is leavinp tbe company because be has accepted a position in Hawera, that the medal would be presented to him at Hawera on tbe iirst opportunity- The medal won by Volunteer G. H. Saywell will be presented when tbe Colonel visits Feilding in August. Colonel Newall remarked that he was much gratified these two medals had been won by a company in his District.
