The Board of Education of the Canterbury district to-day considered the dispute in the boot trade and resolved upon certain suggestions which it is thought should be agreed to. These will be submitted to the parties concerned before being made public. At Lyttelton to-day Francis Forward, charged with having uncustomed jewellery in his possession, and Jas. Bang, electric ; ian on board tho Bimutaka, charged with importing the same goods with intention i to evade customs duty, were each fined LI OO and costu. The fine was subsequently reduced to L 25. Auckland, July 29. At the Supreme Court to-day in Banco the case argued was an appeal from the Commissioner ot Stamps in the estate of the Hon. P. Dignan, M.L.C. It seems that the late Ml* Dignan, at his death on the 20th October, 1894, held 1000 shares in the Bank of New Zealand, on which there was a liability for calls of LIO.OOO. The first call was made on the 20th November, 1894, nearly six weeks after his death. Argument lasted the whole forenoon and .judgment was reserved. Wellington, July 29. William Lainbourne has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment by the Magistrate at Masterton for imposing on the Benevolent, Society there. Accused a))eged he was in desperate circumstances, and had obtained relief while subsequent inquiries found he had LBSO on deposit in the Bank at Marton. B. Simpson, tobacconist, was fined L 5 and costs on a charge of selling printed matter of an indecent nature. On the second information a nominal penalty was inflicted. Mr J. E. Fitzgerald, Controller General is seriously indisposed and his condition is causing great anxiety to his friends.
