THE SECOND TEST MATCH.
SPLENDID SCORING OF THE AUSTRALIANS.
(Per Press Association.) London, July 16. The second test match began at Manchester to-day. There was a very large attendance, and the wicket was good, but the weather changeable. The All England eleven is composed of — Grace, Stoddart, Jackson, Maolaren, Rangitsinghi, Abel, Richardson, Brown, Hearne, Briggs, and Lilley. For the Australians the fol lowing play :— Trott, Giffen, Trumble, Jones, McKibben, Donnan, fredale, Hill, Darling, Gregory, and Kelly. Trott, with his usual good fortune, won the toss, and Iredale and Darling went in. Richardson and Briggs were the first pair of bowlers. At nine Iredale gave a difficult chance in the slips to the Indian prince, which was not taken. Darling hit out vigorously at once, but with the score at 50 was caught behind tbe wickets. Giffen, who was next, began with three fours off the Surrey bowler. Jackson, Hearne and Grace were tried one after another, but without; avail. Iredale made three boundary hits off the Yorkshire amateur in one over, and 100 appeared for 80 minutes' play, both batsmen giving a brilliant exhibition, in striking contrast to the feeble batting of the first innings in the match at Lord's. At three o'clock they were still together, the score then being : — Darling, c Lilley b Richardson ... 27 Giffen, not out 56 Iredale, not out 47 Total for 1 wicket 130 In the County matches, Essex defeated Yorkshire.
