An " inset " is published with today's issue drawing attention to the half-year-ly clearing sale of drapery, etc., now proceeding at the local branch of the United Farmers' Co-operative Association. On our first page of to-day's issue will be found an advertisement from Mr John Cobbe, drawing attention to the colossal sale now proceeding at his well known drapery and outfitting establishment. Town and country residents would do well to inspect his stock. Business at the Bon Marche has been extraordinary brisk during the last few days, Messrs Spence and Spence's great winter sale attracting people from all parts of the district. It is wonderful what a magnetic effect reduced and bargain prices have of attracting the different people. Ir, is that of cultivating fringes. I meet every day dozens of youths, with small caps on the back of their heads, and fringes o f frizzled hair dragged over their foreheads. lam told that some of these interesting youths put their hair in paper at night so as to obtain the curliness which wan not originally in their lank locks. Their fringes appear to be liberally greased, but noncogniaant of soap and water. To me there is something nbsolutely repulsive in street boys making ■hems-lyes up as girls ; and I wish you w ovid raise tip your powerful voice against the practice. Had they been seen in the streets of Imperial Home, I fear their vocation would have been unmißtakeable. —Englishman."

On speaking to the captain about it, he was angrily told to mind hiß own business, and the course was repeated to the quartermaster with emphasis. The gentleman then went to the first officer and told him of the circumstance, and the latter saw at once the danger the vessel was in. He also remonstrated with tbe captain in vain, and then taking the law into his own hands, had the captain secured in his own cabin, and altered the course just in time to save the ship. The captain had to be removed to an asylum two days afterwards.
