John Ryles' filed statement shows — Liabilities, £32,207 ; assets, .830,646-, debt to the Colonial Bank of £64,074, covered by securities to the extent of £38,092. Mr Sinclair, Mayor of Tapanui, and Mr Sim, a Cookston settler, are mentioned as candidates for the Clutha seat. After a bearing extending over 4 days the appeal case, Oliver v. Taylor, was concluded in the Supreme Court. Thos. Oliver was convicted by the S.M. on a charge of stealing gas from the corpora* tion by means of an illegal connection at the Sussex Hotel, and sentenced to two months imprisonment an appeal was lodged against the decision. Justice Williams dismissed the technical objections that it bad not been shown that it was stolen on tbe 10th of Marcb or within six months before, and affirmed tbe conviction by the Magistrate, appeleant to pay costs. The police bave arrested near Tapanui a man named David Low, who had an illicit still in full process of distillation Gisbokne June 25. A Maori named Tuta Nagamu, aged 18 has committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree at Tuparoa. Nelson, June 25. | The steamer Peuguin, which left for I the south at nine this morning, met with a mishap off Wangamoa, her screw shaft breaking. A boat was lowered ! and steered towards Cable Bay, whence ' a message was despatched to this port, and the steamer Kennedy left at eight o'clock to render assistance. She will probably tow the Penguin to Nelson, but it is possible the Mawhera, which is expected to-morrow morning from tbe coast, may take the Penguin on to Wellington. The Kennedy cannot return before the Telegraph office closes. Wellington, June 25. Replying to a deputation to-day the Minister of Lands doubted whether the work of completing the road beween Shannon and Eketahuna could be undertaken ou tbe score of the cost, wbich was estimated at £8000. However, as the road would assist the stock owners and open up a large area oi grazing country, he would place the application before his colleagues when the estimates were being prepared. This Day, The Waihora with the prisoners Kirby and Bassett arrived at noon. A large crowd assembled on the wharf to obtain a glimpse of them, but little opportunity was offered as the wharf was roped off and accused hurried into a cab and driven to tbe police station. Kirby appeared to feel his position very keenly, but Bassett was rather jannty in manner. It is not yet decided whether the accused will be brought be* fore the Court tbis afternoon, but should they be a remandjwill be asked for. Sir Robert Stout will appear for Kirby and Mr Wilford for Bassett.
