THE FIRST TEST MATCH.

MISERABLE DISPLAY BY THE j AUSTRALIANS. (Per Press Association.) London June 22. The first of the test matches between tbe English and Australian elevens began at Lord's 10-day. The weather was fine, and the wicket very fast. There was an enormous attendance. Owing to the condition of the ground Gunn and Richardson were, at the last moment, chosen to replace Peel and Wainwnght, and the St. James' Gazette, referring to tbe personnel of the team, says England has never put a finer eleven in the field. The Australians won the tosa and decided to bat, but made a very feeble stand, the whole team being dismissed for the small score of 53. Donnan was dismissed by a brilliant return by Jackson. When the score stood at five Giffen had the bad luck to touch the first ball he received, and it was safely held by the wicket-keeper. Gregory and Darling made a good stand, and between them put on about three-fourths of the total score, then Gregory fell a victim to the fast bowler, and the same bowler dismissed Graham with his next ball, and shortly afterwards Darling was dismissed by a bailer from Richardson. Both Hill and Trumble played one on their wickets, and the innings closed in an hour and a quarter. The following is the score of the Australians : — Ist Innings.
