The Drmmond Castle Wrecked. 245 PERSONS DROWNED.
ONLY THREE "PERSONS SAVED. (Per Press Association.) '"" ' London, June 17. A telegram from Ushant reports that a serious collision has taken place near there. A steamer collided with, the Drummond OasMe, and the latter sustained such serious damage that she sank in the short space of three 'minutes. The vessel carried 143 passeng: ere, and officers and crew numbering 103. , r Up to the present only two have been saved, but there are strong hopes' that some of the others may be rescued in the Bhip's boats • * v . Later information shows ' that {he Drummond; Castle was not in. collision, but strnck Molene Island at midnight on Tuesday. . , * .p^ Marknardt, one of the passengers, is so far the only person saved. ' 5 The British cruiser Sybille, attached to the Mediterranean Squadron; w& nessed the sad accident, and her boats were immediately lowered, but owing to the rapidity with which the unfortunate vessel collapsed all attempts at rescue were rendered futile. * ' ■ '* Later. The Drammond Castle strnck on a snnken reef. Only tbree of those on board are known to have escaped. *A huge rent was torn in her bottom, and the vessel sank at once. She did not carry mails or specie. The weather was calm at the time, and it is supposed the catastrophe was caused by- a fog. Captain Pierce was her commander. i
