FAILURE OF A SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION. (Per Press Association). | Sydney, This Day. | Professor Agassiz reports the scientific expedition to the Great Barrier reef proved a failure, as owing to the unfavorable weatber they found it impossible to carry out dredging and exploring work. Agassiz therefore abandoned the project, and returns to America. Melbourne, This Day. J The Premier states the Government will not take the initiative towards holding a conference to discuss the establishment of an Imperial Zollverein, but if the other colonies move in the matter and seek the co- operation of the Victoria Government he will give the request his consideration. Adelaide, This Day. The Treasurer has introduced a Bill to provide for a consolodation of the bonded debt. It is stated the present debt of the colony amounts to £24,246,---000, the interest on which is approximately a million at rates ranging from 4 to 6 per cent. The Treasurer has hopes he can readily replace the whole of the debt with 3 per cent bonds. A sinking fund of not less than £50,000 per annum is to be formed for the redemption of tbe debt.
