Coleman Philips, a well-known resident of the Wairarapa district, speaking at Greyton, announced he would be an independent candidate at the general election, possibly for the Wairarapa j seat. a ! 0. Tregurtha, keeper of Brothers Lighthouse, reports that on May 29th he saw some strange marine monsters. They were about three miles off. At first he thought they were whales, but he could not Bee any spouting, though there was plenty of splashing. Three of them rose 15 to 20 feet out of the water, aad remaining in that position for half a minute, and afterwards a fourth appeared. Their heads were snake like, with the neck much smaller than the head, and of a greyish white colour. Another monster like an enormous shark, with two fins behind its head, was also seen by Tregurtha and another man named Butler. Invercargill, June 17. Daniel Watson, aged 30 years, committed suicide at South Riyerton. It is stated that he bad money invested in property and fears for its security deranged his mind. He was to have been married on the day he committed tho actNapier, June 17. A four-roomed bouse at Hastings, owned and occupied b.y Georgo Hayes, was burned tl.i< ceo in ing, the inmates hardly escaping with their lives. Brunt on, a neighbour, received rather severe injuries while endeavouring to remove furniture. The cottage and contents were insured for £200 in the New Zealand Office. Ciiristghurch, June 17. • Hftrry Thompson, of tho Pioneer Bicycle Club, yesterday lowered J. O. Sborland's record of 1 hour 40secs. for 25 miles to 59m in 30secs. Thompson now holds all the Cyclist Alliance standards and a record from half a mile to 25 in i lea, and a record for one hour's riding, having yesterday beat Shorland's record for one hour by over three miles. Thompson's time for 25 miles is the record for Australasia. Auckland, June 17. At the Supremo Court yesterday the adjourned action brought by M. B. Howard (petitioner;, against Annie Howard (respondent), und William E. Whitely (co-respondent), for a decree nisi for a dissolution of marriage on tho grounds of the co-respondent's adultery with the respondent, came before his Honor Jnatice Conolly. Samuel Adam a was examined relative to the signing of a document at his house. Mrs Howard, respondent, was also sworn and was examined. She made a statement to his Honor. She said she had no desire to prevent the divorce although her husband had brought the proceedings. His Honor dismissed the case against Wbitely, corespondent. The petition was dismissed and his Honor granted co respondent his costs.
