A very fine specimen of tbe new Victory Treadle Sewing . Machine is to be seen in the boot window of the New Zealand Clothing Factory.. It is claimed that this is the simplest and smoothest running machine ever invented and its durability is guaranteed for three years. The one on view is certainly a beautiful machine and it should meet with a ready sale. Vol. G. Saywell, of the Manchester Rifles, is still leading for the North Island gold medal. Sixty-eight commercial travellers have paid the tax of £50 levied on pernons representing bouses outside of New Zealand. A Bankruptcy Bill is to be introduced this session to give effect to the amendments proposed by the various Chambers of Commerce. The bankruptcy is announced at Christchurch of Messrs Wood, Shaud and Co., the principal creditors being the Union Bank to the extent of £20,000. Mr John Watson (of Watson Bros.), found a cheque, and left it at the Star office, this morning. The document has been banded to the owner who is deeply grateful. A meeting was held at Pohaugina on Wednesday to discuss the advisability of erecting a stock bridge across thePohangina river. Mr Dickin, chairman of the County, presided. Nothing definite was done beyond appointing a committee to formulate a scheme. A treat for boys is announced in our wanted known column in the shape of a splendid magic lantern entertainment to be held in the Wesleyan school room tomorrow at 4 p.m. As the promoters are resolved on giving the boys a good time it is hoped there will be a large attendance. At the practice of the Feilding Har- ' mouic Society held last evening there was a fair attendance of members. Several choruses and glees were sung in preparation for the coming concert to be held in July next. Any persons wishing to join the society are requested to send in their names to the secretary, Mr H. W. Giesen. Ministers are of opinion, it is stated, that the Hon Mr Ward should resign but he should not be expected to do so until the judgment of the Court is given as it might affect the fiudingof the Court. The general opinion seems to be that Mr Ward will not again enter the House as a Minister. A caucus of Government supporters is to be held on Monday to discuss the Ward aftair. Buyers of boots may expect bargains during the next fortnight. John Cobbe having bought for prompt cash the entire boot stock of Mr George Crichton, the well known Ashurst storekeeper, who is retiring from business. The stock is fresh and in good condition, being mostly of the Premier brand. And having becu bought at a discount of 60 per ceut oil cost price will be sold cheap. The sale will commence on Saturday and coutiuue for 14 daj's only, The friends of Mr Donald Monro, of Chelteubain, will regret to learn of the death of his son, John Donald, who died of a severe attack of peritonitis, at the residence of his uncle, Mr Wishaw, of Fowlers'. The funeral took place yesterday, when a large number of sorrowing friends and relations followed the mains to the cemetery. The Rev Ferryman in a very impressive manner conducted the burial service. Mr Fanthorpe was the undertaker. We sympathise with Mr Monro in his bereavement. It is a cm-ions coincidence, says the Napier Herald, v was teu years to the day and almost to the hour yesterday morning, when the series of earthquakes were felt, since the tragical Tarnwera eruption of June 10th 1886. On ihat, day the people of Napier heard a series of loud reports like the booming of canon. The H B.
