THE MATCH AGAINST AN ENGLISH ELEVEN.
(Per Press Associaitoni. London June 9. The attendance at the match was only moderate, though the weather was fine. The wicket was heavy and in favour of the bowlers. The chief contributors to the Australian score of 106 were :— Giffen, 13 ; Gre gory, 25 ; Trumble, 5. Spoffarth secured six wickets for 49, and Pickett 2 for 24. When the Englishmen went in they fared worse than the Colonials, the last wicket falling at 65. Pickett 20, Traffold 13, Phillip (not out) 11, made most of the score. Giffen, who did the " bat trick," disposed of six men for 20, and Trumble took the other 4 for 24. The Australians had to go in again on the bad wicket, and lost three men for 29. In the first innings of the Australians, Spofforth disposed of Gregory, Giffen, Hill, and Donnan in five overs for two runs. Trumble played a vigorous innings. In their first essay the Home team had lost eight wickets when the board showed the small total of 26. Giffen bowled Nepean, Perrin, and Rawlin with consecutive balls and shortly afterwards Spoffortli and Whitehead, the five being disnaisaed in five over 9 for five runs. The second innings of the Colonials finished for 131, Gregory being the chief scorer with 43.
