Halcombe Notes.

o A Gospel Temperance Society and Band of Hope was successfully inaugu* rated on Friday evening last in the Presbyterian Church. Notwithstanding the short notice, about seventy persons came together. The Rev. A. Blake, who had organised the meeting, occupied the chair* After the opening hymn and prayer, the chairman explained the object of the meeting. Master S. Cuff recited " Curfew shall not ring tonight ;" Miss Spur die sang" Little Nell ;" Pastor Gaustad gave a brief but appropriate address ; Mrs Dowling gave' a solo on . the organ; Mr Bennett recited "The Tippler's Fight;" Miss Fr'aser gave a song " Children's Voices," and Mr Wil« liamson spoke on the present phase of the temperance question, adapting his re* marks to the young as well as the old. Pas* tor Gaustad moved a vote of thanks to the chairman, who, also, stated that 'he was '> pleased to see so good an attendance on short notice and with the good, conduct i of the young people. Seventeen pledges' were obtained and the meeting closed, , when a number , remained behind 'to transact business. Appointments were made as under :— Rev. A. Blake,' M.A., , President; Rev. Mr Griudley, Pastor Gaustad, vice-presidents ; C.J.Bennett, , secretary; MrDowling, treasurer; Mrs Dowling, Mrs Blake, and Mr Williamson, programme committee ; Messrs R. liinton, W. Ferguson, jnnr., J. Bradley,. C. Crabb, and J. Managh, management' ' committee. The next meeting to be held in the same place on the 19th inst., at 7 p.m.
