Australian Cricketers in England.
FIRST MATCH OF THE TOUR.
(Per Press Association.) London, May 11. The Australian cricketers began the opening match of the tour at Sheffield Park to-day when they were opposed by eleven chosen by Lord Sheffield. There was splendid weather and a large attendance, including the Prince of Wales, to whom H. Trott, captain of the visitors, was presented. The wicket was not of the best, being rather lively. Trott won the toss and decided to bat. Donnan and Darling were the first to go to the wickets, opposed to the bowling of Mold and Pougher. Each batsman played with confidence and scored freely. Darling gave the spectators a brilliant display in cutting and hard, clean driving, but he gave a hard return to Pougher early in the innings which was not accepted, with 34 on the board Jackson relieved Pougher. Latest. Donnon is not out with 24, and Darling not out 55 ; extras, 1. Total, no wickets for 80.
At a meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council to consider the terms offered by the various associations in the Colony for a visit of the Australian team next season, it was resolved that alternative offers be made to the Australian Eleven — (1) for £650 for five matches based on guarantees from Hawke's Bay, Wellington, Canterbury, and Southland, and takings of New Zealand match ; or (2) seven matches on the terms offered by tbe different associations, with a minimum guarantee of £450 for the New Zealand match.
