Inter-colonial Fruit Conference.

Wellington, May; 8. £ At the Intercolonial Fruit Conference this afternoon, in the course of a discussion on the advisability of spjjaying trees to eradicate pests, Mr Kirk, New Zealand = Government Biologist, said Government would introduce a Bill next session to cosupel growers to keep their orchards clean and to regulate the transit of fruit. - He sincerely hoped that local feelings would not be allowed to interfere with the general principles of the -Bill. Mr Ritchie said as soon as the Bill became law stringent steps would be taken to enforce its provisions. The Fruit Conference carried, resolutions in favour of legislation making cleansing of orchards compulsory, that the list of best varieties of apples, peare, and plums be received from fruit societies and published, that the Conference express its appreciation of the liberal rates v for the carriage ot frnit on the New. Zealand Railways, that the museum as suggested in the Government Biologist's re^ port of 1894—1895 be established, thai the fixing of the new place of conference be left in the hands of the delegates irbm Sydney and Queensland, that effective steps be taken by various Governments to prevent the introduction of insect pests . by fruit or fruit trees. The question of fruit cases was held over till nest conference. A unanimous vote of thanks to the Government for its courtesy to delegates was carried amid cheers, * Replying to the vote of thanks . to the judges of fruit at the show, Mr Corrie (Queensland) said the grading and packing were bad and he advised New Zealanders to pay more attention to this important matter, especially if they intend to send exhibits to Australia. After the customary votes of thanks the Conference closed. • .
