«_ In the United States 6433 new churches were erected last year. Mr C. Carr will hold his first stock sale at Apiti on Monday next. Entries for Mr R. E. Beckett's stock sale at Halcombe on the 14th instant are published to day. Mr J. H. Hooper, dentist, notifies today that be has reduced the charge on full sets of teeth. The Earl of Lonsdale spent nearly L 125 ,000 to entertain the German Emperor for a week at Lowther Castle. The Rifle Club at Birmingham is " moving along " and will probably begin practice to-morrow, weather permitting, Yesterday was a field day at the Foxton S.M. Court. Nine counsel were present, and the building was crowded to suffocation. We have to thank the bachelors of Beaconsfield for a card of invitation to their dance to be held on the 15th inst. at Cheltenham. On Wednesday, the 20th instant, a promenade concert and dance will be held in the Mangaone Hall under the auspices of the Colyton Cricket Club. A new advertisement from Mr Milson, stationer, will appear to-morrow. A replace advertisement from Mr Alford, stationer, will also appear in to-morrow's issue. The humming of telegraph wires is not caused by the wind, as it is heard during dead calms. Changes of temperature, which tighten or loosen the wires, probably produce the sound. There were 120 cremations in England last year, against three in 1884. Besides Woking, there is a crematorium at Manchester, and another at Glasgow. One is to be erected in Liverpool, There are several cases of diphtheria at present in Kumeroa, in the Woodville district, and Dr Milne has written to the School Committee asking them to close the school for a short time. The secretary of the Public Library acknowledges with thanks a parcel of books of reference from Mrs Macarthur among them being ' Sugar Beat Manufacture, 1 Phormium Tenax,' ' Political Stray Thoughts,' and ' Orange Culture.' At a meeting of the management committee of the Manchester Kifles, held last night, it was decided to give a social and dance in the Hall on Friday, the sth of June. Color- Sergt. Milson was appointed to arrange the musical part of the programme. The German Beichstag voted a million marks as a first instalment for a new battleship. It is stated that Germany would never be able to rival the British and French navy, but they must be strong enough to command in time of war the Baltic, which was German water. The very wet weather last evening again prevented the Riley-Carol Company playing in the Feilding Assembly Roomß as advertised, only a few persons putting in an appearance. The management decided, under the circumstances, to abandon the entertainment, but will play at Cheltenham this evening. The ' Ensign ' says that a rather unique and pleasurable experience awaited Mr W. Fraser, M.H.R., for Wakatipu, at the close of his address the other evening at Garston. A vote of thanks was passed unanimonsly, expressing the electors' thanks to him for his speech, confidence in him as their member, and confidence in the Opposition. The shooting at the butts by the Manchester Rifles on Queen's Birthday promises to be interesting. Prizes hrve already been donated by the New Zealand Clothing Factory (Mr Johnston), the United Farmers Co-operative Association (Mr Davy), Mr Dixon, Mr Carthew, Mr Ward, MrsKirton, Miss Washbourne, Mrs Sorley, Mrs Milson, Mr Alford, Mr Cobbe, Mr W. Hodren, and Mr H. L. Jackson. In connection with the recent decision of the Fruit-growers' Conference about the size of fruit cases, the Foxton Herald points out that such cases only weigh 45lbs, apples and all, and as the railway freight is only 6d per 561bs, there is little advantage in the cheap freights. It is an extraordinary thing that the elect of the fruitgrowing interest should have neglected to notice a matter of such infinite importance to their own class. The Colyton Cricket Club have just completed ploughing and levelling their cricket ground, on one of Mr Neilson'B paddocks. The ground has been levelled in the form of a circle with a diameter of 100 yards, and it is expected that next season this ground will compare most favorably with that of any club's in the Manawatu Union. The work was entrusted to Mr J. Stewart who carried out the work in a first-class manner. The popular landlord of the Apiti Hotel has an advertisement in to-day notifying that his hotel offers special advantages to sportsmen during the shooting season as imported game — such as pheasants and quail — may be found in great numbers in the surrounding district. Those who know Mr Eaear have perfect confidence in his ability and willingness &t all times to study the comfort of his guests and patrons. Mail coaches run to and from Apiti every day. Yesterday afternoon the mortal remains of the late Mrs J. W. Bramwell were interred in the Feilding cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, almost every business man in the town being either present or represented, and a number of country settlers joined in the mournful procession as a mark of sym - pathy with the husband of the deceased and relatives in their sad bereavement. Since 1891 the population of Melbourne has decreased by 43,435. Mr Greenwood, dentist, has reduced the charge for full sets of teeth. Captain Edwin wired at noon to-day : — Glass further rise and much colder weather. Mr Cartbew's usual monthly consignment of books and periodicals, from London, was opened up to-day. A boy named Young died at the Napier Hospital from injuries received while at football aggravating a complaint from whicK he was previously a sufferer. The first practice of the Feilding Harmonic Society, which was called for last evening, was not held owing to the bad weather. The practices will be continued from Thursday next, when all members are requested to be present. Speaking at the Fruit-growers' Conference, Mr H. S. Brabant said the lemon was one of the most profitable fruits that could be grown. He knew of one man who made .£2OO in one year from the cultivation of lemons. Messrs Wood and Judkins report that they held their sale of furniture and bedding at Birmingham yesterday. The attendance was fair, the bad weather interfered with it somewhat. Tbe goods were however disposed of with the exception of two or three lots at fair prices. The Rontgen photography is accomplishing wonders. By its aid a needle in a patient's hand in the Birmingham Hospital was located and extracted. An American doctor claims to hare succeeded in photographing his brain. An Italian has invented what he calls a cryptoscope, which utilises the Rontgen rays, enabling people to see through opaque substances. Messrs Wood and Judkins announce that they will hold their usual auction sale at their mart to-morrow, at 1.30 p.m. sharp. A large quantity of produce and sundries will be sold. In addition to this the whole of the household furniture and effects of Mr F. W. Clayton are to be sold. For the convenience of buyers they have been taken to the mart, and as they make up a very extensive list, they should attract a large attendance.
