The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. WEDNESDAY, MAY 6. 1896. THE BANK OF NEW ZEALAND.

•" The New Zealand Times of yesterday publishes the salient points of the figures shown by the quarterly banking returns recently gazetted. They are as follows : — l. An increase in the amount of Government deposits ; 2. An increase in deposits not bearing interest, being the natural result of the harvest and wool proceeds being banked ; 3. A decrease in the amount of fixed deposits, consequent, we sup pose, on the reduction in the rate of interest now given: 4. A reduction in the debts due to the Bank, the result of the adjustments authorised by law, which have been given effect to and which only now affect the averages to any apparent extent ; 5. A reduction in the amount of other securities, the effect of the writing down the Estates Company's shares from the proceeds of calls and from other sources ; 6. The coined gold, silver, and bullion on hand shows the large amount held and available in New Zealand of £1,055,---956, apart from Government securities, £363,418, also held.— Altogether the results of the operations of the institution during the period indicated must be considered satisfactory.

The following are the traffic returns on the Napier-Taranaki section for the period ended 31st March (31 days) and for the corresponding period in 1895 {29 days) :—

£21,582 8 2 £18,268 10 2 We have already published the totals for the colony, which show an increase of £32,000 In connection with the formation of a Chess and Draughts Club, we have been reminded that such an institution was formed here within the last two years, but it fell through from lack of interest. However, if any four or five players like to form the nucleus of a new club, there are several sets of chess men and boards, which the present holder, Mr E. Giesen, will gladly place at their disposal. A suitable room can easily be obtained in a central position.
