Colonial Dairy Produce in England.
Messrs W. Weddel and. Co. report under date 20th March :— Butter.— The demand for colonial butter has been somewhat slower than last week, though a fair amount of business has been done considering the small quantity of butter on the market. Had there been the same quantity as last season prices must haye fallen enormously ; as it is values are 18s to 20s above the corresponding week of last year, while Danish [ and Swedish are only 5s to 10s higher. There is no' change in prices from last week for choicest colonial brands, which are becoming very scarce ; indeed, the quality of none of them, even the best butter's, is equal to what it was two months since, and, therefore, very choice parcels make good prices. Odd lots have reached 102s to 104s this week, bat this is quite exceptional, and 96s to 100s is the average for choicest, and 90s to 94s for best factory. Pastry butters are selling at far above their relative value, and may be quoted at 80s to 86s. Last year at this time these inferior butters were making only 50s to 60s. The quantity of colonial butter competing with Scandinavian is now too small to play an effective opposition, and it would have been wiser for the Danes to have maintained last week's quotations, as the result of the present drop cannot withdraw the trade from Australian «and New Zealand butters, and will only have the effect of weakening the market. It is exceedingly doubtful if it will reduce ihe price of colonial, though very probably that is what they expect to do. Cheese— New Zealand is selling fairly well at 36s to 40s for coloured, and 41s for white. The quantity afloat from the Colony is Tongariro 248 cwt, Bateshire 3828 and the Mamari 1113, which cannot be considered large.
