The Feilding Star, Oboua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. MONDAY, MAY 4, 1896. " MADE IN GERMANY."
The feeling excited against Germany among the people of Great Britain within the last few months, owing to the conduct of the former in Transvaal affairs, is not likely to be abated for some time. A contemporary suggests that New Zealanders should help in the war of reprisals by wiping out German trade. This colony is flooded with German goods of one kind or another " from toys to cutlery, from color printing to bedsteads, from jew's-harps to pianos. With the exception it is alleged of the printed work, which is as good as that produced by any nation on earth, these goods are all inferior to British. Why not refuse to buy them troio the merchants who import them ? This would be a reply to the German attempts to annoy us in every part of the globe, for if they found that their hostility resulted in loss of trade they would soon alter their tactics Let 1 Made in Germany ' be a bar to the purchase of articles that can be obtained of batter quality from British sources, even if they cost a slight percentage more. This will help our own
countrymen, and teach a lesson to I those who seek to destroy us." This has been done in England, for the trade with Germany in respect of the articles mentioned has already fallen off in a very marked degree. Whether this sort of thinpr is prudent or not we are not prepared to affirm, but when John Bull is angry he does not always stop to consider the probable result of his actions. ■
