Manchester Road Board.

The regular monthly meeting of the above was held on Saturday afternoon last. Present — Messrs Messrs F. Y. Lethbridge (chairman),* H. J . Booth, G. Wheeler, A. Con way, J. Purkiss, The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From G. E. Little, manager for 0. Pharazyn, re drainage on Kimbolton road. From Treasury, stating loan of £500 for Kiwitea bridge (Kimbolton j road) was now available; also, that the loan of £957 for repairs to Onepuhi bridge had been provisionally approved. From Lands and Survey Department, stating the question of a subsidy towards cost of reconstructing Gorge bridge would be considered by Government when the estimates are being framed. From R. Cobb, drawing attention to holes in Palmerston-Ashurst road. From Clerk Feilding Borough Council, applying for £560 19s 7d, this Board's share of cost of constructing Kiwitea bridge. From F. S. Gray, asking if Board would sell planks taken off Menzie's bridge. — To be sold by auction. From Land and Income Tax Department, information re notice to strike rates. From A. K. BlundelJ, stock inspector, asking to be supplied with names and addresses of those to whom slaughter licenses have been granted. From Manager Bank of New Zealand, re overdraft. From John Macfarlane, abandoning contract No. 2, Wilson's road. From A. G. Meyrick, asking the Board to widen cutting into Makino creek on Junction road. From J. Bassett, asking permission to erect a fence a few feet on roadline to prevent cattle getting into a metal pit on his property. — Granted, subject to the Engineer's approval. From Stratford, Treadwell, and Field, solicitors, asking for particulars of rates due on section 58, sub division P. From Colonel Newall, stating the. toll-keeper at Lower Gorge Ferry had made a demand from him of £3 for crossing troop horses, and stating this could not legally be charged to officers and men while in uniform and on duty. From Pahiatua County Council, asking what this Board intended to do with reference to Gorge road and tolls. Messrs Corntoot, Bruce, and Fergusson waited on the Board to request that the Board should do something to the Sandon-Kakariki road to make it passable during winter. The Chairman informed the deputation their request would receive consideration. Mr Wishnofski waited on the Board with a petition to make about five chains of road to give access to the properties of petitioners from Stanway road, in Halcombe town district. He was 'informed the matter would receive consideration. Resolved, That certain drains in the district of Ashurst, inspected by the Engineer, be cleaned out. Resolved, That the Engineer be instructed to see the road complained of by Mr Cobb and have a few loads of metal put on Palmerston-Ashurst road. Resolved, That the Engineer expend a sum not exceeding £5 on road line leading to A. Wishnof ski's section. Resolved, That the balance standing to the debit of the Board at the Bank of New Zealand, Feilding, on the 31st March, 1896— viz., .£2304 14s 9d— be hereby made a liability of the current year, and that arrangements be made with that Bank for an overdraft margin for the ensuing year up to the Board's legal borrowing limit — viz., £2500. Resolved, That the roadmen throughout the district be instructed to send into the Board's office the names of persons allowing pigs to stray on roads, and that the Clerk deal with such cases under the Police Offences Act Resolved, That tenders be called for the formation of Sandon-Kakariki road. -The Engineer, Mr Bray, reported that he had inspected Todd's road, which required about 50 or 60 yards of metal, and that it would take a full month for one man to trim it. Resolved, That the Engineer be instructed to make a track' into Mr Hunt's property ; also, to have Todd's road trimmed and metal put on. Resolved, That the Engineer be instructed to have the cutting into Makino creek, on. Junction road, attended to. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Con way, That the Chairman, Mr Booth, and the Engineer, meet Messrs Little, Burr ell, and McKay, and inspect drains on Kimbolton road; date to be arranged to suit parties.— Carried. Resolved, That Mr McFarlane's request, to be allowed to postpone his No. 2 contract, be granted, on the understanding, that he start again on receiving notice from the Engineer. Resolved, That the Engineer have a small culvert put across Furlong's road and have drain cleaned out near Adsett's mill. The following tenders were received — For metal on Mackay's line — F. Rink, 2s 4d per yard (accepted) j J. Wilson, 3s • E. Charles, 2s 9d ;'F. J, Bocldy, 2s lOd. For metal on Kimbolton road — F. J. Boddy, Is lOd per yard (accepted); J. Wilson, 2s 6d j E. Charles, 3s Sd. Mr Con way here handed in his resignation as Warden for No. 6 ward. Resolved, That Mr Conway's resignation as a member of this board be accepted with regret. In accordance with the Road Board Act, a ballot was taken, this being the first year after the triennial election to ascertain which members should retire, and Messrs Lethbridge and Wheeler were drawn, the third vacancy being eflected by Mr Cpnway resigning. After passing accounts amounting to .£lO3 16s 9d for payment, the board adjourned.
