Consecration of the New Bishop of Dunedin.
(Per Press Association. 1 * Dunedin, May 3. The ceremony, solemn and imposing, ' of consecrating the Roman Catholic k Bishop was performed for the first time in the colony in St. Joseph's Cathedral this morning, the proceedings lasting three hours and a half. The Cathedral was full, leading citizens of other denominations beiug present. The Hon. J. G. Ward was among the congregation. Cardinal Moran was vested in full pontificals and proceeded with the consecration of Dr Verdon as Bishop of Dunedin. The assistant Bishops were ; Dr Murray, Bishop of Maitland; Dr . Grimes, Bishop of Christchurch ; Fathers Lenihan, Administrator of Auckland, and Devoy, Vicar General of the Arch ) Diocese, Wellington, acted as Chaplains i to the Cardinal. Father Cumming, , Vicar General of Christchuroh, was Chaplain to Bishop Grimes and Father [ Carew, Greymouth, to Bishop Murray. [ Fathers O'leary, Lawrence, and Egan, 1 Auckland, also acted as Chaplains. Archbishop Carr, of Melbourne, and Archbishop Redwood were also present within the sanctuary. The Bishop elect having been presented and the brief read, he took the oath of duty and fidelity. The examination followed and the elect prostrated himself and remained so while the litany was sung. He then preached the con- ' secration sermon, at the end of which the congregation came forward to kiss ! the new Bishop's signet ring.
