TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,—lt is not in many matters [ that Feilding drags behind, but in one !at least she comes in a bad last. Al- j most every town in the Manawatu has ! its chess and draughts club except Feilding, and why this apathy exists it is hard to understand. Surely there ; are a few lovers of the best of all | games in Feilding Surely there is an equal want for such a club in Feilding as elsewhere. We must admit that our town is a dull little place in the evening, most inland towns are, but a good chess club tends to dispel this dulness for all those who care for qniet amusement. Experience of other towns shows that a chess and draughts club is easily formed, three or four making a start, others soon rally round. They art; also easily and cheaply managed (2s 6d is the subscription of the Palmerston and Waverly clubs), and if a little activity is displayed by members, the club is bound to hold its own The Telegraph Depart mentjgives every encouragement to chess clubs by granting use of the wires free of charge for telegraph matches with other clubs, and these matches are most enjoyable to both players and onlookers. I trust that the chess and draughts players of Feilding will not allow this club to be a want in Feilding any longer, but at once make a start, no matter how small at fixst, and establish the Feild ing Chess and Draughts Club before the winter sets in. I am, etc., No Longer Checkmate.
