TAXING " STRONG WATERS."

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I beg to draw attention to the following cutting from Sbarland's Trade Journal, and to add that though certain sections may think it wise to make it almost impossible to obtain wholesome malt or spirituous liquors through the strain of tariff and other exactions, yet even they will hardly assent to the same pressure on the drug trade :—" The last freak ofthe Customs Department is to charge duty on Fluid Extracts at the rate of 16s per gallon as being ' strong waters,' in place of a duty of 9d per pound. Seeing their instructions are to get the uttermost farthing out of the present tariff", they are only doing what is expected of them ; but if the present injustice is allowed to pass unchallenged we may expect still further (inpositions." Strong , waters, indeed I Fancy a convivially disposed person having a burst upon Fluid Extract of " Cascara " and expecting it to go ;to his head ! ; I am, etc., F. A. Monckton.
