♦ A DEPLORABLE STATE OF AFFAIRS. {Per Press Association*. .'UCKLAND, April 28. Mrs Crow, resident at Otabubu, is in a critical condition through burns. Owing to nursing a, sick child almost night and day she fainted and fell over the lire, capsizing a kettle full of boiling w«ter ou her. At a meeting of the Charitable Aid Board the chairman, Mr John Bollard, said that 200 children in Auckland and suburbs warn being brought up as prostitutes and thieves. lie urged that these children be taken from tlieir parents by the State, and put iv a special home. The expenditure would be £4000 a year. The total amount banked to the credit of the Brunnerton Relief Fund iv Auckland is £750. The Athletic Carnival produced £224. Christchurch, April 28. At the Police Court this morning James Alexander Robinson, who was arrested on a charge of incendiarism in connection with the Windsor fire, was charged with having assaulted his wife and threatened to shoot her, and was sentenced to one month's imprisonment and ordered to find sureties to keep the peace. On the charge of incendiarism be was committed for trial. The'ratcable value of city property for 1895 was £189,856. This was less, by £3000, than the amount of the previous year. Dunedin, April 28. The Bowling Association decided to point out to the Northern Association, in connection witb the proposed exhibition tournament, that the biennial tournament would take place at Christchurch in February next, and it was hoped the date of the exhibition tournament would be arranged so as not to clash.
