Sawmilling Industry.
The Bartholomew family are inseparably connected with the sawmilling industry, and tbey are all noted for the complete manner in whioh they equip their sawmills, the honesty and straightforwardness of • their transactions, and tbe considerate, manner in which tbey treat tbeir'employees Of the younger generation, Messrs George and John Bartholomew, who have just started a mill at Upper Pohangina, just above the junction with Coal Creek, v are particularly well known for their special fitness for all branches of the work requisite to make a sawmill a success, and their venture of tbe PohSngina river is worthy of notice. Having acquired the rights of several residents in the magnificent milling timber on their sections up tbe river, including a quantity of magnificent totara, Messrs Bartholomew erected a mill on Mr Hugh Fraser's section at which to commence operations. It would take a chapter to describe the difficulties the enterprising firm met with in the work of transporting the plant from the main road up some twelve miles pf the river bed to the site, but all these were overcome at last, and about a week ago the firm, were gratified with being able to cut tbeir first lot of totara. An inspection of the mill shows that the most careful attention has been paid to every detail. The breaking down is done with twin circular saws, and the substitute for a travelling bed is very ingenious, two trucks being worked by means of an endless wire chain, an idea of one of the members of the firm. Machinery is being erected for planing, tongueing and grooving, etc , and in a very short time the mill will be one of the most complete in the district. We congratulate the firm on their enterprise, and trust they will reap the reward they have fully earned — Standard.
