The Standing Committee of the Anglican Diocesan Synod has resolved to cordially concur in the proposition oF Bishop Nelville to appoint Canon Robinson (late of Queensland) to assistant. Bishop Nelville colebrates his silver jubilee of the episcopate on 4th June. A five-roomed house at Cavp.rsbam, occupied by Hillier, an employee at the Government workshops, has been destroyed by fire. The house was insured for £200 in the Standard office, and the furniture for £50 in the Norwick Union office. The adjoining house, insured for £400, escaped with a scorching. Oamabu, April 22. At the inquest to-day on the body of John McKay, killed by falling off the express train going South, a verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being attributable to anyone. Levin, April 22. Before the Horowhenua Commission the final addresses of counsel on the main issues were given yesterday. Auckland, April 22. Mr Lawry, M.H.8., addressed his constituents at Newmarket. The speech was mainly directed to a defence of the Government, and in reply to Captain Russell's at the City Hall. He was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence. Walter Montague, storekeeper, on the s.s. Mataura, was fined £3 129 6d and costs for bavin? seven yards of surge in his possession uncustomed. Defendant pleaded guilty. At a meeting of the Auckland Temperance and Christian Endeavour Societies re local option polls elections it was urged at the poll to strike out only the top line of the local option voting paper, thus casting their votes for no license, and allowing the Education yote to stand for what it is worth. Wellington, April 22. The Gothic left Plymouth for Wellington and Lyttelton on the 18th. Masterton, This Day. A man named Louis Holmes attempted suicide at Masterton last night by taking " Rough on Rats" dissolved in gin. It is likely he will recover. He has been despondent through non-employment. Bkunnekton, This Day. A man named Erickson was killed near Moana Lake, Brunner. He was crushed by logs which he was drawing out of the bush.
