The annual meeting of the Auckland branch of ihe New Zealand Society for the protection of women mid children was held in the V.M.C.A. buildings this afternoon. His Excellency, Lord Glasgow, presided. The committee in their report stae that 79 cases have been brought under notice of the committee. The balance sheet showed that during the year the total receipts were £18, leaving a balance of £7. Three stowaways by the Anglian from Napier to Auckland were fined 40s or 14 dave. A widow, Elizabeth Jones. 33 years of age, hanged herpelf at Archill with a clothes line, while mentally despondent. Wellington, April 20. The adjourned annual general meet ing of the shareholders of the New Zealand Times Co. was held to-day. The report and balance sheet were unanimously adopted without much discussion. A resolution of sympathy and condolence with the family of the late Mr E. T. Gillon was carried. Hugh McCormick, of the Picton Rowing Club, has been finally selected to represent New Zealand in the Inter-colon-ial Sculling Championship. Christchurch, April 20. Mr W. \V. Tanner, M.H.R. for Avon, addressed his constituents to night and received a vote of thanks and confidence. A man named Robinson, alleged to be concerned in tbe fire at Windsor on Saturday, was arrested at Yaldhurst this afternoon. Nelson, April 20. A bowling match played this afternoon, Wanganui v. Nelson, was won by Nelson. Masterton, This Day. Andrew Whitsitt, injured in a quarry at Eketabuna, died to day.
