The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 1696. THE MILITIA.
From time to time rumours are circu lated that the Defence Department will find it necessary to cxll out the' militia of the first cla^s. In that con-; nection the following paragraph from ■ a contemporary may b« looked upon ;is •; significant. It chpes not appear to be known what the Government intends to do with the Snider rifles and carbines returned by the \o!unteers when they received the Martini-Henrys, but it has been suggested that they should be put into as good condition as pos sible, and stored in the four centres, together with a sufficient stock of Snider aoununition, ready to be issued to the militia, ©r any other force which, if war became imminent, would have to be levied to assist the vplunteers. For the militia to be of any «ge at all in the event of a war, they should be put in training at once, because they ivould need at least a month's hard d^ili and instruction before they wen; fit to handle their rifles without danger to their friends, and with a reasonable hope of doing damage to the ene.Biy.
