Telegraph Changes
A NEW SYSTEM of SIXPENNI MESSAGES TO BE INTRODUCED. The Government baye decided to cs- ' tablish a system of 6d telegrams. Tbe delayed system will he abolished <:»- j tirely, and a 6d tariff for ordinary tele- ! grams for 12 words substituted, with a Id a word after tbe first 12 words. The new system will come into operation on June Ist next, so as to enable the necessary arrangements to be completed. It ! is anticipated that the cbange will re- | suit in a very large increase of work ; throughout; the colony, and those tele- ! graph messengers wbo are able to oper- I ate have within tbe last month been put ; through tests in telegraphy. The change will mean the employment of a con- j siderable number of additional persons j in the service, and there is every reason to believe they can be drawn from the j ranks of the juniors. New Zealaud will under this altered condition of affairs enjoy the unique distinction of beiDg the only country in Australasia that has adopted the sixpenny telegram system, and it should give general satisfaction to tbe public. — Times.
