The Political Position.
it The Duneain Star says:— "We venture to predict that, notwithstanding the avoidance of the subject by the Premier, and the small confidences of Mr "Ward, the financial question will be the leading one of the session, and that most of the measures announced in the programme will be shunted over the general election. There are, it would seem, sound reasons for this view. Finance must be faced, since existing conditions are critical, and, whatever proposals the Government may make, they are sure of their majority, the members composing which will not dare to act independently, realising, as they will fully, that the result would be their non-acceptance as Ministerial candidates at the general election. Whatever they may have declared in regard to farther borrowing or otherwise they will be constrained to swallow, aud assuredly will do po, with a more or less good grace. As a compensation, however, they will presumably be relieved from having to commit themselves on several questions, their votes upon which, one way or the other, might imperil re-elec-tion by alienating sections of the party on whose ennport alone they rely."
