Fighting the Slave Traders.
Lieutenant Alston, of the Coldstream Guards, and Captain Stewart, commanding the Sikh force, hare achieved three brilliant victories over the slave- trading chiefs in the British Central African Protectorate. The Arabs were totally routed, and 14 chiefs taken prisoners. The effect of these victories is to clear the road to the interior. A telegram was received at the Foreign Office giving details of the fighting. The action was fought against a powerful chief named Mwasigungu, living in the country west of Lake Nyassa, wh© had formed a strong confederacy with other Arab slave dealing chiefs to close the trade routes, and raid the district for slaves. Mr A. J. Swarm, a British official, endeavored to settle matters peaceably by means of negotiations, but Mwasigungu declared war on the British. Lieutenant Alston was despatched with Sergeant Major Devoy and 15") men to assist Mr Swarm who had raised a force of 5,000 native allies. They united, and marched into the interior. In three battles they totally beat Mwasigungu and his allied chiefs, whose|forces were estimated at 20,000 men. The British captured 50 towns, and two strong stockades, which Lieutenant Alston took by assault, Mwasigungu fled, but 600 prisoners, including 14 chiefs, were captured. Among these was the notorious Saidimiwazingu, who was reported to have murdered Dr Boyce and Mr McEwan, under a flag of truce m 1891. He was taken to Kata Kota, on Lake Nyassa, tried for his crimes, found guilty, and executed. Lieutenant Alston, captured an Arab national standard, 50 cattle, 560 lb of national produce, 94 guvs, and some gunpowder. The British loss was six killed and five wounded. The enemy lost very heavily. Mauriceville, February 26th, 1896. Mr John Dunlop, Feilding : Dear Sir, — "As sole agent for us we forward a truck of our superior lime to you to day.
