Evading the Income Tax.

HEAVY PENALTIES INVOLVED. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, March 24. Tbe Deputy Commissioner of Taxes recently laid an information against several well-known citizens of Auckland for having tailed to make returns of their income in accordance with the Land and Income Assessment Act. Mr Northcrofc gave judgment in each case, a fine of £5 being inflicted. Tbis also carries with it the imposition of treble the amount of tha tax in addition to the ordinary annual amount, which the indiyidual has evaded payment. Mr Campbell has explained in Court that tbe Department was making caretul investigations and if it were found others had neglected to send in their annual returns probably prosecutions would follow in other parts of the colony.
