THE SUPREME BEING.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. j Sir, — I am both sick of and amused at letters which appear in your columns ' from time to time against Socialism. The writers seem to have no knowledge of thoir subject, but if they do know anything about it, then they must be acting the lame plover, to draw little boys after them, which is Dot always a sale game for the limping plover. How I do pity the Supreme Being when He is placed in their hands. I have never conversed with sceptic or atheist who did not ground his disbelief in the existence of the Deity, and the rejection of Christianity, on such orthodoxy as theirs. If their letters should have any political effect at all it will be to the strengthening of Liberal hearts and haug)s a^aiust Toryism ; but, even then, I do wish they would not drag the Supreme Being into their scribblings. Their spleen should carry them no further than the vilification of the Government. I shall be sorry if their twaddle compels me to give up the Star. Can the moon have anything to do with the monthly recurrence of their scribbling craze . I am, etc., Liberal. A Kiwitea correspondent writes : — The main difference between Mr Seddou and Captain Kussell is that Mr Seddon is a leader and Captain Russell is not. Mr Seddon is always ready for a fight and fights all the time, Capt. Russell is seldom ready for a fight, and, when his courage is screwed up to the " sticking point," he only fights for "a little time." The real Conservatives, or, as they have a right to call themselves, the " pure Liberals," won't have i Sir Ilobert Stout at any price, while he holds his opinions on religion as revealed in Scriptures, and, while they are doubtful of Captain Russell as a leader, they are perfectly confident in his honor and uprightness as a man. What the " true Liberals" should pray for is a leader, and as Sir Robert Stout cannot believe lin the efficacy of prayer, he is past praying for, in a political sense. The fact is that, as a politician, Sir Robert has " shot his bolt." The question is — If not Captain Russell, who is to be oar 1 leader ?
