Manchester Road board.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above body was held on Saturday last. Present — Messrs F. Y. Lethbridge (chairman), H. Booth, G. "Wheeler, J. Purkiss, and A. Conway. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From W. G, Pearce, asking for leave of absence from this meeting. From Treasury, provisionally approving of loan of £500, this Board's share of cost ot constructing Kimbolton road bridge. From J. H. Richardson offering to make dog collars at 5-£ d each, and from A. F. Haythorne an offer of 6d each. — Former tender accepted by the Clerk. Mr Henry Burrell waited on the Board to ask that a ditch opposite his property be cleaned out before winter. Resolved, That the Engineer report on the drains referred to by Mr Burrell. Resolved, That the name of Alex. Conway be placed on the rate roll for section 9, sub. X, in place of Frederick Dufield ; the name of G. Sixtu3 in place of H. Hart for section 28 M ; and the name of John Gillies in place of L. Lassen. Resolved, That the Rangitikei County Council be informed that this Board has taken the necessary steps to obtain its share of the loan necessary to repair the Onepuhi bridge, and on receiving the amount will immediately pay its share on account. Resolved, That Mr Fry be paid £2 for diverting Makino creek and making bridge over outlet. — Carried. Resolved, That Mr J. Ashworth be granted a slaughter license. Tenders were received as follows for lowering grade on Wilson's line : — J. McFarlane, £36 for No. 1 contract and £30 for No. 3 (accepted); Wilson and Charles, £78 for both ; F. Rink, £55 7s 8d for No. 1 ; W. H. Belfit, £90 for both ; B Poole £124 for both. LOWER GORGE BRIDGE. The chairman stated that Mr Boulton, chairman of the Pahiatua County, had visited Feilding with reference to the reconstruction of the Lower Gorge Bridge and ruaintenanoe of the road. Mr Boulton said the Pahiatua County were willing to assist to build the bridge and thought that half the profits ot tolls should be placed to the credit of the Pahiatua County and any damage to the upper bridge should be paid out of this. If a ioan was raised the interest should be the first charge on the toll. The chairman said that he or Mr Booth, who was present at the interview, had not pledged themselves to any arrangements. Mr J. Cotter waited on the Board and stated that he had asked Mr Fred Pirani, M.H.R., if he thought the Government would give any assistance towards the reconstruction of this bridge, and to what extent. Mr Pirani believed the Government would give £ for £ and if requested by the Board would interview them (the Government) on the matter. After discussion it was arranged that the chairman should write to Mr Pirani requesting him to interview the Government to ascertain what assistance they would give towards re-erect-ing the bridge. In the meantime the Engineer will commence the preparation of plans for a new bridge. The meeting then adjourned.
