CHEAP CARTING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —l was sorry to see the letter from Mr Haybittle, headed " Cheap Carting," in your Saturday's issue. I do not know whether there is any regulation forbidding the carriers of Feilding from helping any person or object which they may wish to benefit by giving their services without charging for them. If this is so I have too good an opinion of Mr Haybittle not to believe that he has often broken it himself. The implication conveyed in that sentence of the letter which speaks of a man " carting freely for an institution and having it publicly announced as a cheap bid for popularity " is quite unfounded in this case, as the notice referring to Mr Wickhanj's kind services to the Band of Hope was inserted. entirely without his knowledge. As to professional men, I have always been taught that the very essence of a "profession "is that a professional man should be willing to give bis services without hope of fee or reward in those cases when the recipient is unable to pay for tbem, and I am glad to know that tbis good tradition is not dead —even in little Feilding. The cheese-paring spirit which tries to get everything done " on the cheap " is not a worthy one, but there was no desire for personal profit in this case, which cannot always be said. As for notifying in print that Mesdames A, B, C, and D gave liberal contributions of cake and help, that Misses E, F, G, and H wore themselves out in arranging tables and preparing and dispensing tea and sandwiches, and that Messrs X, V, and Z did yeomen's service generally, well, that's a matter of taste. I am, etc, J. Greenwood.
