The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1896. ENCOURAGEMENT TO FRUITGROWERS.

Os the 4th of May next, a Conference of Australasian Fruitgrowers will be held in Wellington. A fruit show will be held at the same time, and, although the end of Autumn will necessarily limit the number of classes of exhibits, yet the schedule on which awards are to be made is a long one, and includes apples, pears, walnuts, peaches, nectarines, plums, quinces, figs, persimmons, grapes, oranges, i lemons, cotions, limes, medlars, straw- ! berries, almonds, blackberries, guavas, , passion, fruit, melons, cobnuts, and ! , filberts. There are separate classes j , for evaporated fruits, and a further ' i

section for collections of tropical and sub-tropical fruit open to all Australasia. One very interesting class will injurious to vegetables. There will be be devoted to a collection of insects also other entries in the shape of horticultural appliances, including orchard tools, cutlivators, spraying implements, and apparatus for fruit-gathering. The Government will grant free railway passes to the regularly appointed delegates. As the settlers in this district are largely interested in fruitgrowing, although the industry may be said to be yet in its infancy, we hope and trust they will use every legitimate means to support the Conference and the Show, because they will be in themselves an education in all the recently discovered methods of increasing the productiveness of their orchards, by teaching how to combat and destroy the insect pests which play such Sad havoc with the fruit in all its stages of growrh. We would suggest that qualified delegates be ap pointed, at the proper time, to represent Awahuri, Colyton, Feilding, Halcouibe, Kiwitea, and Birmingham, with the districts beyond, so that the knowledge available at the Conference may be distributed over as large a surface as possible. We agree with our contemporary, the Wairarapa Daily Times, in saying that in any case the Show must be the biggest thing of its kind that has ever been promoted in New Zealand, and should receive the cordial support of settlers in every part of the colony.
