A Strange Case.
« On Wednesday forenoon (writes onr correspondent) the Waimate Police made a raid on a shop in the main street, having got wind that liquor was being supplied to a prohibited man therein. On entering the premises, the person in question was fonnd hopelessly drank, and his friend who had supplied the drink, about half seas over. A bottle of whisky and several bottles of beer, half consumed, were standing on a table. The Police confiscated the bottles, and were returning to the lockup, but had great difficulty in getting round the corner into High street with ». them, las the morning was a drongthy one, and the Police feared a rescue by a number of leading citizen who had cllgregated to discuss the matter. However, they succeeded in forcings their way through the crowd and the confiscated whisky and beer were safely taken to the lock-up. An information is to be laid against the men for supplying a prohibited person with liquor, but it is not certain yet what steps will be taken against the respectable citizens for the attempted rescue of the beer.— Oamaru Mail.
