The Transvaal Trouble.
TRIAL IN CONNECTION "WITH JA-MESOIS'S INVASION. (Per Press Association.) London, February 11. The trial in connection with Jameson's invasion has been adjourned indefinitely. The evidence is regarded as weak. Jameson, before the engagement, wrote to De Wet, British agent at Pretoria, that he was unable to retire until he obtained food from the Rand He molested no one, and was anxious to aid the Britishers in their extremity, and then retire. February 13. The German White Book has been published, containing the despatch by Baron Marechall von Bieberstein, Minister for Foreign Affairs, to Count Hatchzelt, Ambassador in London, urging that the interests of Germany required the automony of the Transvaal should be maintained in terms of the treaty of 1884. It is further pointed out that a commercial union of the African states would be injurious to Germany. As early as Deer. 24 Kruger was taking precautions against a raid. The German Consul at Pretoria was authorised on Deer. 31 to summon 50 marines from the warship to protect the Consulate. Despatches show that Kruger appealed to Germany and France to intervene immediately Dr Jameson started. The Trausvaal has ordered two additional batteries of heavy guns from France and Germany. Rhodes has refuted the Cape Argus statement that German policj' in the Transvaal is a greater menace than a hundred Jameson raids.
