The Feilding Star. Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1896. BOROUGH LIGHTING.
In carrying the proposal that the Borough Council undertake the controi of lighting the business part of the town by electricity the meeting last niglit acted prudently. Had they done otherwise *feey would have practically shelved the ,sehe#ie for several years at least, because, judging from the tone of the speakers it w,as ev&eat the feeling of the Mayor and Council was against giving concessions to a «aippany. The fact that only those ratepayer to be directly benefited will have to pay jtjhe necessary charges, whether in the form oi pjites, or fees for the use of the light, ma&eg jthe project equitable, therefore we may concl&df that when the necessary poll is taken i& wfyl be carried by a large majority. W.e are &??are that certain objections may, «nd dojubttesg wWt b© wised *g»yjsjb the scheme, but it is .more $an j*o^t£>le thes,e wijl be :^Ssf»Uy comfeatted b^r spjipd reason
and the influence of those who have the very best interests of the Borough at heart. If Feilding is ever to go ahead, the residents, as Mr Bailey very truly said last night, must learn to pull together, also to exhibit a greater spirit of unity. It is not a good and sufficient reason because one man proposes a thing that his " friend and neighbour " should do his very utmost to oppose it merely to gratify a captious spirit. On the contrary, he should give his neighbour credit for the best and purest motives and endeavor to assist instead of to thwart him. " Unity is strength," while " a house divided against itself shall not stand."
