Cricket News.

The match played at Colyton on Saturday last between Birmingham and Colyton resulted (as reported in yesterday's issue) in a very exciting game and creditable win for the latter. The game was keenly watched by two hundred spectators, including many of the fair sex, and was played very spiritedly by both teams. Birmingham batted first, the bowling being entrusted to W. and J. Entwisle, with the result that within 30 minutes five batsmen were dismissed for 12 runs. At this stage a most serviceable stand was made for Birmingham by Tompkins and Smith, who played good cricket for 14 and 12 respectively. When they retired a procession set in again, which lasted through the innings. Result — 44 runs. Colytou then faced the bowling of F. Barlow and G. Smith, who bowled splendidly throughout, dismissing the Colyton champions one after the other for a total of 23 runs. The Colyton players were now looking despondent, while Birmihgham wore smiling countenances . Birmingham' s second innings commenced very well, and Hedges gave his opponents a merry time whilst compiling 37 runs, got by real hard driving and steady play. The remainder of the team only made seven runs, which, with 20 extras, brought the total to 64. This gave Colyton 85 runs to make in their second innings, and Colyton supporters were thinking of buying crape, whilst the Birmingham J men were in the seventh heaven of delight. J. Entwisle, however, cheered his comrades by running up 32 runs by splendid batting, some of his hits being clean off the ground. He was well supported by G. Millen, W. Entwisje, arid A. Wratt, and when the last man faced the bowling there were still six runs wanted to win. These were made withoat disaster amidst the greatest excitement, thus ending a very interesting game. Luncheon was provided and served on the ground, whilst Mrs Nilsson provided afternoon tea, which was much appreciated by all the contestants and their friends. The next match between these clubs will be played on the Feilding ground on March 14th, and will be looked forward to with much interest by cricketers in the Manawatu Union, as, if Colyton wins, they secure the championship for the second year in succession. (Per Press Association!. Capetown, Feb. 10. Lohmann, playing for Loid Hawke's team against the Cape, took 15 wickets for 38 runs. Melbourne, This Day. The fourteenth man of the Australian team will not be chpsen until the conclusion of the iuter-cplonjal contests. A match will' be commenced on March 6th between the chosen team and the next best Australian eleven.
