The Manchester Kifles held their annual muster parade last night, when the arms and accoutrements on issue from the Defence Department were inspected by Lieut.-Colonel Newall. The company was then marched out and instructed in the duties of advanced and rear guards, and on the whole acquitted themselves very creditably, Colonel Newall expressing himself well satisfied with the work done, with a few exceptions. Owing to harvesting operations, several men were excused for their un^i avoidable absence. This morning two squads at the range held their individual and volley firing, cne squad under Lieutenant Barltrop and Sergeant Milson and a second under Captain Kirton and Sergeant Aitken. The scores were remarkably level — as follows : — Volley. Squads No of men I J 'ts. Av'ge. Ist squad ... 12 80 6-66 2nd squad * ... 12 79 6*56 Independent. Ist squad ... 12 205 17.08 2nd squad ... 12 205 17-08 The men who were absent will be given another opportunity on Wednesday afternoon, 26th instant. The Snider rifles will be called in immediately after the class firing is finished, and Martini-Henry rifles issued.
