The Medical Congress.
(Per Press Association.) Dcnedin, February 8. The Medical Conference met to-day, 92 being enrolled np to the 'present. The proposal to form an Australasian Medical Association for the main purpose of producing one medical journal for the colonies was negatived after a lively discussion by 43 to 26 in favor of an amendment for continuing tbe negotiations instituted at the last Congress. A memorial from the W.C.T.U., Victoria, with reference to the Contagious Diseases Act, on being introduced by the Secretary at the request of the Union, was received with laughter, this being checked by an observation of Dr Mackle to the effect that it should be treated with respect. On the motion of Dr Sprinerthoorpe, Victoria, it was resolved to transfer the testimonial for purposes of discussion to tbe public health section* The members of the Medical Congress were entertained at lunch by the Mayor. Lord Glasgow, the Premier, Colonial Treasurer, Bishop Neville, Father Lynch and representative citizens and members of local bodies were present. Tbe speeches were all in a light vein. The Mayor, as an old volunteer, referring to the war clouds, said he could assure Government that the volunteers of tbe colony were prepared to do then: duty in defence of the colony. The Premier referred to what Government had been asked to do in the matter of tbe Con* gress, and expressed his gratification tbat with one exception the colonies had federated to have a successful Congress in Dunedin. ■ Dr Batcbelor delivered tbe inaugural address, and traced the progress in scientific knowledge and the treatment of disease within the last quarter of a century: In tbe cause of his address he hinted at the desirableness of extending the course of professional training.
