The Transvaal Trouble.
o (Per Press Association) London, Feb. 1. Mr Chamberlain has ordered Mr De Wet, British agent at Pretoria, to inquire into the alarming reports as to disorders prevailing in Johannesberg, and expresses confidence that if such exists President Kruger will soon take steps to remedy the evil. Mr Cecil Rhodes has instructed counsel for the defence of Dr Jameson and party and himself in connection with tbe Transvaal difficulty. The Times states that in an interview President Kruger said he was willing to meet the Uitlanders over tbe questions of education and Municipal Government, but would be extended the franchise. He expected tbem to remain loyal or otherwise be swamped. Febuary 2. Mr Chamberlain discredits the telegram from Johannesberg, published by the Times, to the effect that tbe residents were reduced to a state of serfdom.
