(Per Press Association'). Christchurch, Feb. 2. The Christchurch election is fixed for February 13 and nominations for February 5. Wellington, Feb. 1. The Post to night publishes opinions from two residents conversant with military matters. Both strongly condemn the defences of the port. The Wellington College lias achieved a most creditable record in the University examinations published this week. Out of 23 candidates all but one succeeded. This Day. The search for the girl Gamberi/zi, who lefc a letter stating she intended to drown herself iv the Hutt, was unsuccessful. Her boots were found on the river bank and traces of footsteps, but tbe river, although low, was dragged without: avail. Dunedin. This Day. W. Taylor, aged 40, committed suicide by hanging in a house at Roslyn. He was a bachelor, and had been living a hermit's life. A man named John Erskenedied suddenly at Tapanui last night. He had been drinking heavily before going to Tapanui, but not since. The cause of death was inflammation of. the bowels. Lord and Lady Glasgow, family and suite returned from the lakes this afternoon. His Excelienoy was received by the Mayor, the Naval Artillery furnishing a guard of honor and the artillery firing a salute. Hawera, This Day. A young man aged 25, named John McDougall, was drowned in a dam at Makoia on Saturday afternoon while I bathing.
