The Boers had carefully due trenches all over the place. When Jameson appeared, the Boers retreated to the protection of the kopjis, and the Englishmen, thinking they were running awayVfollowed in close order, thus offerins a splendid mark. The fusilade was kept up till Jameson had fired his last shot, and then he had to surrender. He was given five minutes to make up his mind. The Boers expressed admiration for ttaa way their opponents fought. In" an interview afterwards the Doctor said that although his Johannesburg allies failed him, he would have escaped had they destroyed the rails outside the town, as the Boers had no ammunition until an express engine and truck arrived from Johannesberg. The Cape Times says that Jameson was trapped in sight of 15,000 armed men, whom he went to help. There •WsS\ a scene of wild excitement when known.
