THE PUBLIC LIBRARY.
TO THE EDITOR! '„ . Sir,— l notice in your report of the opening of the Public Library that a private room is to be kept for subscribers only. Are the ratepayers to quietly abide by this because the Chairman says it is right. Am I to, pay a library and a loan rate (two loan rates in fact) for this private room, and be barred fronrgetfcing or reading a book in there, while 4 an oat* sider who pays 2/6 a quarter, but no£a, farthing of rates, can order me out?. Who pays the Librarian to look after this * room ? I would also like to know whether Mrs Macarthur gave the books of her late husband to the ratepayers of Feilding or merely to the subscribers who are to enjoy— at our expense— the privilege of a private room. x ' I am, etc., Alfbed Ease.
