Prince Henry of Battenberg's Death.
THE QUEEN PROSTRATED WITH GRIEF. (Per Press Association.) London, January 22. Prince Henry of Battenburg died on the 20th inst, off Sierra Leone Prince Henry of Battenberg was proceeding to Madiera when the relapse set in. The Queen was quite prostrated. The proposed review of the squadron by her Majesty has been cancelled, owing to the Prince's death. January 23. It is expected that the funeral of Prince Battenberg will take place at Windsor Castle. The Emperor of Germany has sent n message of condolence to the Royal family. Many meetings have been held in London and the provinces, at which resolutions of sympathy with the Queen were carried, on tne loss of one who volunteered for service in a foreign country. The Prince's death has been a terrible blow to the Qneen, who was most deeply affected, especially at the knowledge that her favorite daughter's happy life had been thus crushedHer Majesty had a delicate interview with Princess Beatrice in breaking the news. Later. The Queen paFsed a sleepless night, and is now far from well. Prince Henry of Battenberg, whose death is cabled, joined the expedition against Prempeh, the King of Ashantee, and was invalided after an attack of fever a few weeks ago. The latest news was that he was improving, though still ail ing, and that he had shipped for England. However, he seems to have died at sea off Sierra Leone. The deceased Prince, who was a son of Prince Alexander of Hesse, was born on the sth of October, 1858. On the 23rd of Jnly, 1885, he was married to the Queen's favourite daughter Princess Beatrice, and four children have been born of the marriage. Prince Henry of Battenberg was Governor of the Isle of Wight and Carisbrook Castle.
