The War Cloud.
(Per Press Association.) London, January 20. It is reported that Great Britain has purchased from the Argentine Republic two cruisers now being constructed by Sir William Armstrong at his works in Elswick. Lord Salisbury, replying to Hon. Olney, Attorney-General of the United States, declares that the British squadron, now being equipped, is not destined for the Bermudas, and is prepared to satisfy America on the point. January 21. The statement that Lord Salisbury replied to Olney's enquiries as to the destination of the new Flying SquadroD, is officially denied. ■ At the Lamington banquet Mr Chamberlain's reference to the German Emperor evoked the " National Anthem " and " Rule Britannia." He twice quoted Tennyson's ode: "Long life to Flag, Fleet, and Throne," which was received with cheers. The St. James Gazette states Lord Wolseley is for preparing the possible despatch of 6000 troops for foreign service. At the banquet to Lamington, the new Governor of Queensland, the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain, said the incidents in the Transvaal showed that it was impossible for a portion of the Empire to be in I danger without an echo from the whole, and he alluded to a certain rebuke England had received amidst her misfortune while surrounded by jealous rivals. The Empire was held in trust for the British residents throughout the world, and it was determined to maintain her rights and fulfil the duties to the isolated colonies. Secure and abundant loyalty had been displayed by the messages co promptly responding to the outburst against England. He urged the colonies to develop commercial routes and unite for mutual defence, as a federated empire was a potent factor of the world Paris, January 21. The French Government is equipping the reserve squadron at Toulon for the purpose of strengthening the Channel fleet.
