FIRE ON BOARD THE STEAMER CINTRA. JAPANESE ENTERPRISE. TELEGRAPH LINES BLOCKED. (Per Press Association.) Melbourne, Jan. 11. Arrived — Talune from the Bluff. This Day. Later accounts show that there was considerable panic on board tbe Ciutra when tho fire was first discovered, but the coolness of the Captain and officers soon restored order. The sailors worked splendidly in suppressing tbe fire. Sydney, January 13. Mr Marks, Japanese Consul, bas just returned from a visit to the Land of the Mikado, which extended over several months, and gives a glowing account of the growing commercial advancement of the country, News by the China mail steamer shows that at a recent meeting of shareholders in a Japanese mail line of steamers it was unanimously decided to extend the service to Europe, America and Australia. It is proposed to commence the service to Europe at an early date with six steamers. Somo of the crew of the Monowai, from San Francisco, signed off here, and refused to sign on again except at an advance of £1 per month. Later. The Monowai's crew refused to sign excepting at an advance of £1 per month. The Seaman's Union is picketing and using every endeavour to indnce the new crew which joined the Monowai to become members of the Union. Adelaide, This Day. Severe thunderstorms and heavy rains in the Northern territory are interfering with the telegraphic service. The Port Darwin line has been blocked.
